Engie and Bromsgrove District Council have launched a new electric vehicle (EV) charging network.
Powered by Engie’s GeniePoint network, it will provide Bromsgrove-registered taxi drivers with the opportunity to charge their EVs free of charge for the first year.
With further substantial discounts offered for the next nine years, it is hoped the initiative will encourage more drivers to make the shift towards adopting EVs.
A total of 13 GeniePoint Network rapid chargers will be installed and will be available for use by the public as well as other businesses making the change to EVs.
Jerry Moloney, managing director for Engie’s Futures business, said that the rollout is an exciting step towards improving EV infrastructure in the locality and, with discounts offered to Bromsgrove-registered taxi drivers, he hopes it will encourage a great number of drivers to make the switch to an EV.
Engie has secured a contract with Whitbread to install electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints at Premier Inn hotels.
The company is to install 600 chargepoints across 300 hotels over the next three years, with these to form part of Engie’s GeniePoint network.
Sam Hockman, divisional CEO of futures at Engie UK & Ireland, said the contract highlights the “key role the hospitality sector can play to support . the uptake of EVs” as well as the wider commitment to becoming net zero by 2050.
Guests of the Premier Inn hotels will be able to use the 50kW+ chargers, as well as members of the public using the GeniePoint network.

Premier Inn is to introduce 1,000 rapid electric vehicle charging points at hotels across the UK in partnership with Engie, with 600 to be installed over the next three years.
Simon Leigh, group procurement director at parent company Whitbread, said: “Electric vehicles are one of the ways in which the UK strives for a greener future and we’re pleased to help drive this goal forward with what we believe is the UK’s biggest roll-out of rapid charging points to date. We know that ‘range anxiety’ is a real concern for many of our guests who own electric cars.
“Our goal with this project is not only to satisfy increasing demand for electric charging points, but also to aid in reducing our environmental impact, having recently announced our plans to [achieve] net zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
