A collaboration led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, partnering with DOE’s Argonne National Laboratory and New York-based manufacturers C4V and Primet, has been awarded $1.7 million dollars in federal funding to conduct a $4.05 million project to scale up the processing technologies for the manufacturing of manganese-nickel-cobalt (MNC)-based cathodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The partnership was formally developed through the use of a multi-party Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) coordinated by BNL’s Strategic Partnership Programs office.
This effort is an extension of the established partnership between national laboratories and leading manufacturing companies in NY State. It is one of 13 projects that have been selected to receive a total of $15 million in funds for battery manufacturing research from the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) and Vehicle Technologies Office within DO
DOE launches design & construction of $75M grid energy storage research facility at PNNL
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has begun work on the Grid Storage Launchpad (GSL), a $75-million facility located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington that will boost clean energy adaptation and accelerate the development and deployment of long-duration, low-cost grid energy storage.
The planned facility will include 30 research laboratories, some of which will be testing chambers capable of assessing prototypes and new grid energy storage technologies under real world grid operating conditions. The GSL will include flexible workstations and collaboration spaces, including Fellowship Labs, which will provide dedicated space for researchers to incubate storage technologies originating from the US research and development community.

A US$75 million national research and development (R&D) facility for energy storage is expected to be up and running by 2025, the US Department of Energy said yesterday.
Called the Grid Storage Launchpad (GSL), 30 separate research laboratories will be hosted at the site including technology prototype testing chambers and other test labs that put energy storage technologies through their paces in real world electric grid conditions. It will also have workspaces where different teams can collaborate.
There will be a particular focus on accelerating the development and deployment of long-duration and low-cost energy storage. The Launchpad will be built at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in Richland, Washington state. The DoE selected PNNL as the host for the facility, which is also being financially supported with investments from the State of Wash
