PNNL Materials Scientist Uses a Molecular Beam Epitaxy System to Develop Ultra-Thin Films

"The instrument," as it's called, seems to take up the entire room. The sprawling molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system is all tubes, bolts, stainless steel components, and air-tight glass. It can create an ultrahigh-vacuum environment, a space nearly devoid of matter, a space similar to that outside the International Space Station.

Materials Science Collaborations can Accelerate Scientific Discovery

Scientists who study materials can be divided into three categories. "You have people who make things, people who make things do things, and people who try to understand why things do what they do," said Jim De Yoreo, a Battelle fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He places himself into the third category.
