GE researchers unveiled details of an ongoing two-year, $4 MM project through the ARPA-E s ATLANTIS (Aerodynamic Turbines Lighter and Afloat with Nautical Technologies and Integrated Servo-control) program to design and develop advanced controls to support a 12 MW Floating Offshore Wind Turbine. The United States Secretary of the Interior has announced approval of the construction and operation of the Vineyard Wind project the first large-scale, offshore wind project in the United States. Vineyard Wind 1 is an 800 MW project located 15 miles off the coast of Martha s Vineyard and will be the first commercial scale offshore wind project in the United States. The project will generate electricity for more than 400,000 homes and businesses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, create 3,600 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) job years over the life of the project, save ratepayers $1.4 billion over the first 20 years of operation and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 1.6 million tons per year.

While pubs were closed across the UK, thousands of litres of beer which had already been brewed went past its expiry date - meaning that in many instances, it was simply poured away. But independent regional brewer, Hall & Woodhouse, found a more sustainable solution for what do with the unsold beer. Thanks to the brewery s green energy focus, the returned products helped create enough electricity to power nearly 17,000 average homes for a day - or around 46 homes for one whole year.
Toby Heasman, Hall & Woodhouse Head Brewer, said: Although lockdown meant that many of our pubs had to return unsold beer back to the brewery, the silver lining has been that none of this has gone to waste. Thanks to our wastewater treatment plant, all of the returned beer has been used to generate green electricity.
