most existential questions. are we alone in the universe? and where did that first light in the cosmos come from? i think its greatest discoveries are going to be answers to questions that we have yet to ask or imagine. reporter: webb s deputy project manager was hired by nasa 30 years ago to help fix hubble. it was the mechanical version of eye surgery. endeavour s mission in space was to install corrective mirrors of the near sighted at nearly $2 billion hubble space telescope can do what it s supposed to do, see. reporter: once in space, webb can t be repaired by astronauts. it will be too far away. orbiting the sun at a distance four times further away from earth than the moon. the telescope is also so big, about the size of a tennis court, that it can t fit on top of a rocket fully intact. we had to design it so it could be folded up and then unfold in space. it s the origami observe tory.

center, we have thousands of people who put their heart and soul into a program like this. reporter: this is the first leg of endeavour s three-day journey to los angeles where it will eventually call the california science center home. and it is no easy mission. in south l.a., crews are already preparing to roll endeavour through the streets. they re raising power and cable lines from 30 feet to 60 feet above ground to have enough clearance for the shuttle s tail. we had to bring in specialized equipment, because we normally don t work above 30 to 32 feet. reporter: 260 trees are being cut to make room. that s angered some residents. something different, yeah, besides cutting them down. reporter: the science center is promising to plant and maintain four trees for every one that is removed. as the shuttle ended its first day of travel in houston,
all right. you think your vehicle has a lot of miles on it? after logging 123 million miles, the space shuttle endeavour is making its final voyage. nasa s youngest shuttle is going into retirement, heading west for a life of leisure in the california sun. abc s brandi hitt has more. reporter: good morning, sunny and john. this is endeavour s final mission home. and in its journey, nasa has decided to fulfill a last-minute request by endeavour s last commander. it is a magnificent sight, thousands gather to watch the space shuttle endeavour, atop a modified 747 as it took off from kennedy space center and flew over mississippi, louisiana, and texas. i love this kind of stuff. houston, nasa, johnson space
