About one thousand fin whales, one of the largest animals in the world, were spotted swimming in the same waters where whaling nearly wiped them off a century ago. This large number of whales was gathered five miles wide between the South Orkney Islands and Antarctic Peninsula.
Conservationists have pushed for improved protections for humpback whales along migration routes after a young whale was caught in fishing gear in the Antarctic. A researcher noticed that fishing gear and a number of buoys were entangled all over the whale's fluke (tail), where they were injuring and cutting its skin.
In the darkness of the ocean, even surrounded by light, they literally disappear. This certain "ultra-black" creature is known as the Pacific blackdragon, and its "ultra-blackness" renders the creature almost invisible.
