Hong Kong: HKJA chair charged with obstructing police

Ronson Chan, the chair of the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA), was formally charged on September 19 for obstructing police, less than one week before he was scheduled to begin a fellowship at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) urges the Hong Kong authorities to immediately drop all charges against Chan.

Hong Kong: Media restricted from covering handover and inauguration events

At least 10 local and international news organisations have been barred from covering the inauguration of incoming Chief Secretary John Lee and other events during the twenty-fifth anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China on July 1. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemns the conviction and calls on Hong Kong’s authorities to cease the arbitrary jailing of journalists.
