Health Principal Secretary call joint stakeholder efforts to end fistula

Health Principal Secretary Susan N. Mochache has called for joint stakeholder efforts in ending Obstetric Fistula. Speaking during the commemoration to mark International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (IDEOF) at Kenyatta National Hospital, the PS noted that Fistula is driven by social, economic and health factors that can only be addressed through multi-sectoral approach. The PS said that there is need to build capacity to ensure access to comprehensive emergency obstetric care, treat fistula cases and address the underlying health, socioeconomic, cultural and human rights determinants that undermine the national  agenda of ending obstetric fistula and ensuring every woman and girl enjoy their fundamental rights.

Safaricom Foundation & partners to facilitate free surgeries for over 30 women living with Fistula Shares Over 30 women living with Female Genital Fistula including the leaking of urine and stool will receive free surgeries and medical advice in a week-long camp at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). The Fistula camp will be held until 28th May, and is part of a partnership between Safaricom Foundation, UNFPA, Flying Doctors Society of Africa, AMREF Health Africa and Beyond Zero Initiative. The camp comes as the world marks International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (IDEOF) on 23rd May. Commenting on the Fistula Camp, Joseph Ogutu, Safaricom Foundation Chairman said, “This initiative seeks to raise awareness and amplify the plight of women with obstetric fistula, a condition that continues to affect women in sub-Saharan Africa & Asia. Obaseki seeks global action to end preventable stillbirth, obstetric fistula

BENIN CITY – The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has called for increased collaboration among global stakeholders, to raise awareness and accelerate actions to end obstetric fistula, caused by prolonged and obstructed labour, without access to timely and high-quality medical treatment. Obaseki made the call in commemoration of this year’s International Day to end Obstetric Fistula, marked by the United Nations and its sister agencies, with the theme; “Women’s rights are human rights! End fistula now!” According to him, “the campaign to eliminate the often silent but enormous trauma and burden of stillbirth would never become a reality without increased inputs and participation of the traditional and religious institutions, women groups and international organisations, members of the political class, the organised private sector and civil society groups.
