“Raising Cane’s has filed a zoning adjustment application for the site that would let them do a drive-through lane,” said Sikes, who s gearing up to oppose the demolition alongside other concerned neighbors. “That would mean a lot more traffic on that corner, and it’s already a busy corner. Not good for our neighborhood.”
City of Phoenix Historic Preservation officer Michelle Dodds said the city placed a 30-day demolition hold on the building last fall. “We do that if a building is older than 50 years,” she explains. “Then we send an email to preservationists and local community groups to see if there are any objections to a demolition.”

PHOENIX â The building that has housed Duke Photography and served as the backdrop for Arizona senior photos and high school proms for decades could be razed to build a Raising Cane s restaurant. Some community members are worried about losing a piece of history.
Raising Cane s has requested a zoning adjustment hearing with the City of Phoenix seeking variances and use permits to build a restaurant with a drive-thru and outdoor patio where the so-called Duke Photography building is near 7th Avenue and Thomas, according to a copy of the proposal that was shared with the Encanto-Palmcroft Historic Preservation Association, and later shared with ABC15.

News spread on social media in late April that the iconic Duke Photography building in Phoenix could be replaced with a Raising Cane s Chicken Fingers.
The blush-colored building with a teal awning is known for its distinct typographic sign, featuring the Duke Photography logo. The studio, established by the Duke family in 1950, has been responsible for decades of high school senior photos, family portraits and other documented milestones.
The building, located near the southwest corner of Seventh Avenue and Thomas Road, was sold for $2 million to local investor Aaron Klusman, AZ Big Media shared in January 2021.
