To embed, copy and paste the code into your website or blog: As we approach April 1, 2021, employers should be aware of the ever-changing policies and procedures surrounding their requirements to complete the Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 (and E-Verify if they have registered to use it or are required to use it by law) for all new hires. Traditionally, the document inspection requirements of Form I-9 were completed in person when the new hire was going through the onboarding process of a new position, requiring the employee to complete Section 1 on or before the first day of employment, and the employer to inspect the employee’s original documents and complete Section 2 within three days of the employee’s start date. To accommodate the remote working environment of so many during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) adapted its practices and requirements in order to accommodate employers and employees.

their colleagues caught up in the surprise operation. nbc s mariana atencio is speaking with some of the laid off workers and joins us from morton. they were not asked to fill out forms to verify their authorization to work in the united states until after the raids. these forms are normally filled out before you start a job. what did they tell you about this? according to about a dozen of these migrant workers who were let go from ph plants here behind me, it was last friday. so 48 hours after the raids, those that came in in the afternoon shift that were made to sign these i9 forms. this is an employment eligibility verification form that, you re right they should submit to homeland security saying this employee can legally work in the united states. some of these workers, at least about a dozen who i spoke to, one worked at the plant for nine years. another one for 12 years, 14 years, tell me this was the first time they were ever given these documents.

of the smaller plants. i want to walk through the timeline because it s important. the raids happened in the morning. i.c.e. basically came in and swept up workers in the morning shift at ph foods. the workers that worked the afternoon shift started showing up to work about a day or two later, thursday or friday. and they tell me even though it was scary to do so, they desperately needed the money. on friday, they were allegedly made to sign i-9, specifically which is the employment eligibility verification form required by homeland security. these workers tell me again yesterday that this was the first time for many of them, after working at that plant, ph foods, for over a decade in some cases, they were ever made to sign the i-9 employment verification form. in fact, two of them sent me photos. one had been working for 12 years. another had been working there for 14 years. and then yesterday many of these people were allegedly laid off.
