whole from aids saying this didn t go quite well. the president flies in to el paso, there are protests everywhere. a lack of empathy. that is the issue. apparently, the baby was brought back to the hospital. they tried to keep the press out. the president talking about the crowd size in the el paso rally. the president has an empathy deficit. an empathy gap. it is not too much to expect that the president would act like a normal humanbeing. instead, he s talking to the doctors and talking about how big his crowds were a few weeks were. that s not a normal human response. or a helpful response, which is the most important thing to the victims and the families
your various bases of support. i want to just play one clip that stood out for me though from my friend scott seitz and get your reaction. let s roll the clip. he has the muslim ban doing the family separation stuff. does that move votes up here? we are so economically strapped here that that s all we really concern ourselves with. and i know that s terrible. and it sounds terrible. but it s the truth, van. so so let s get into that. because if we re going to have a democratic coalition we need to kind of care about each other somewhat. but are we asking too much? how do you think about the empathy gap that sometimes gets exploited to split the party? i think the voters first care about that economic opportunity. and then if that s taken care of or if there is a solution then it s easier to think about and worry about the other issues, like the muslims, or lgbtq
now. and the clock is ticking too for who can actually put forward a coherent appropriate that says this is exactly what we want to do and now we ve let the air out of the tires of the senate votes, now this is the new standard to what is reasonable. and now because of the republicans switching sides, it seems like the momentum is behind the democrats unless the trump administration comes up with something really good and so far they have been sticking to their guns which has not been working. and expecting a press conference from nancy pelosi today. and we ve been saying every day what the real world impact is. it is no pay pay day friday. and there seems to be this empa empathy gap from the administration. there is now a trend of white house officials or people close to the white house who didnon t seem to understand the paycheck to paycheck nature of some government employees. i don t really quite understand why because as i
sessions, because the ten na k s tentacles are so far spreading that they have gone to the u.s. district attorney in washington and even if he fires jeff sessions, and if rod rosenstein becomes the acting attorney general, mueller is fine, and nothing will happen. but a new confirmed attorney general, then the senate will require that person to say that they will either recuse themselves or that they will in some way or another commit to not interfering with the investigation. i think that real question is if he can put an acting official in who would try to shut it down. that is the threat. it is a tough thing for the president to find someone who would do that. i am not so sure. but we will have to see. and something is clearly going to have to come to a head. thank you very much for your perspective as always. and a coming up, empathy gap. and president trump congratulationing a resident
chief point is important. when the nation is dealing with a massive disaster, natural or man-made, that s the role the president plays as a way of uniting the nation. but that leadership requires empathy in those situations. and as abby points out, there s an empathy gap here. you saw it in that tweet yesterday, declaring a-plus about storm relief and attacking the mayor of san juan, where his administration still has not fully come to grips with the nearly 3,000 who died. and there s a real danger as this storm approaches. not that the response won t be everything it could possibly be, based on the hard work of people at fema, but as we saw after katrina, if presidents go into self-congratulation mode, heck of a job, brownie, that kind of puffery grates because it s so opposite of the people s main. and every instinct this president has is going to go into that. that s such a great point. it s also opposite from what people see around them, from their own experience, from what we ve
