The Texas high school football player who has been charged after allegedly running over a referee during a game earlier this month was told that he will not be able to participate in any league-sanctioned sports for the 2020-21 season.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported that the University Interscholastic League’s executive committee told Emmanuel Duron, 18, about its decision during a virtual meeting. The board’s vote was unanimous.
Earlier this month, Duron, a senior defensive lineman for Edinburg High School, was seen running from the sideline area after a referee announced the ejection. Reports said he slammed into the ref during the first half of the zone play-in game against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo.

Edinburg High School star football player Emmanuel Duron is out – for the remainder of the academic year. The University Interscholastic League voted Monday to suspend Duron from all activities – stemming from his on-field attack on a referee during a football game against PSJA December 3rd.
The unanimous decision by the UIL’s executive committee ends the 18-year-old senior’s high school athletic career. In addition, the committee placed Bobcats head coach J.J. Leija on probation for the next school year. It also placed all of Edinburg High School’s athletic programs on probation for two years. Duron has been charged with assault for his attack on referee Fred Gracia.

EDINBURG, TX â The UIL state executive committee has upheld Edinburg ISD s extracurricular suspension of Emmanuel Duron, according to the Houston Chronicle
The disciplinary actions follow an incident on Dec 3. where Duron tackled a referee. The moment was caught on camera and has since gone viral.
âIâd like to say Iâm sorry for what happened to my coaches and to my family and to the UIL,â said Duron, according to the Chronicle.
Additionally, the UIL placed Edinburg High Football Coach, J.J. Leija, on probation through the 2021-22 school year. All Edinburg ISD school s UIL programs were also placed on a two-year probation through 2022-23 school year.
