Thuso Mbedu: Born and bred! I’m from the land of the Zulus, a province called KwaZulu-Natal.
Growing up, did you always know you wanted to perform?
Thuso Mbedu: I actually thought I was going to be a dermatologist, because when I was younger I had all these allergies. So I did biology, mathematics and all that, and then chose drama as the ‘relaxing’ subject. And I just fell in love with it. We were writing, creating, acting, and I remember having to perform this poem I’d written for one of my exams, but the performance was also open for public viewing. Afterwards, there were these grown people coming up to me,just in tears, crying and thanking me.
“I strongly believe the future of youth publishing being about looking outwardly and not inwardly, outsourcing stories to the communities and people who know them best,” says Nylander. “Our mission is to unite young people globally by telling stories from viewpoints from all over the world; to empower the future of young people by building communal spaces both within and around our output where knowledge and experience is shared freely.”
Among those joining the Dazed Magazine team is Bruce Usher, who has been appointed art director. Jack Mills has been promoted from print features editor to print editor.
Paris-based stylist and creative consultant Imruh Asha is fashion editor, while London-based Mischa Notcutt is casting director and London-based stylist Claudia Sinclair is fashion editor-at-large.

Earlier this year,
Dazed teased the beginnings of a bold new era. After eight trailblazing years at the magazine’s helm, editor-in-chief Isabella Burley announced plans to step down from her role, along with art director Jamie Reid, fashion director Emma Wyman, and editor Claire Marie Healy.
Now, the magazine’s reins have been handed to new editor-in-chief Ib Kamara and executive editorial director Lynette Nylander. The formidable pair announced their vision for the year ahead today, along with their broad editorial strategy and additional team appointments.
“At a precarious moment in the lives of young people all over the world, Dazed’s vision is that we will connect every reader, follower and visitor no matter where they reside, to a global social community,” said Kamara in a statement. “The future of youth rests in their hands.”
