Columbus protesters in support of Palestine gather at Statehouse

Protesters gathered at the Ohio Statehouse Friday evening to demand justice for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and to support those resisting in the latest fight with Israeli forces.  “Palestinians have the right to defend themselves against ethnic cleansing and illegal occupation, event organizer and Columbus resident Yezen Abusharkh, 30, told the Dispatch. We believe Israel s asymmetrical and racist attacks on the Palestinian people are unjust and illegitimate.” At least 126 people, including 31 children, killed in rocket strikes in Gaza Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip continued into early Saturday local time, when an airstrike on a house in Gaza City killed at least seven Palestinians the highest number of fatalities in a single hit. That strike came a day after a furious overnight barrage of tank fire and airstrikes that wreaked destruction in some towns, killed a family of six in their house and sent thousands fleeing their homes.

Teen involved in fatal traffic crash Friday morning in Morrow County

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic crash Friday morning involving a Mount Gilead area teen. Landon Hanahan, 18, was driving a 2006 Jeep Liberty northbound on County Road 30 in Gilead Township, Morrow County, around 5:45 a.m., the patrol reported in a news release.  Hanahan went off the right side of the roadway, striking a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, the patrol said.  Troopers with the Mount Gilead Post investigating the crash determined Hanahan was not wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash, the patrol said. 

Columbus gets court order to shut down Moments Grill and Lounge

Moments Grill and Lounge on the Southeast Side has certainly had its moments over the last two years, according to Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein. Since March 2019, Klein says the bar at 2545 Petzinger Road in a neighborhood shopping center near Route 33 and Interstate 70 East has been the source of more than 100 police complaints and calls for service. Among those calls have been seven shootings, a stabbing, seven felonious assaults, a drug overdose, eight felony thefts, some 20 disturbances and more, Klein s office reported in a news release. In one of these shooting incidents on July 10, the victim was a Columbus police officer working as a special duty security guard.

Southbound lanes of I-71 closed Friday after crash involving semi

The southbound lanes of I-71 closed Friday afternoon and into the evening at U.S. 62 on Columbus South Side after a fatal accident involving a semi trailer-truck.  The crash occurred at approximately 2:59 p.m. when a 2020 International truck and trailer exited the roadway, struck a tree and rolled over in a ditch, according to a press release from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.  Franklin County Sheriff’s office deputies and fire department personnel from Pleasant Township and Jackson Township responded to the crash, which took place south of Lambert Road, according to the release.  The driver of the vehicle was transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition. At 4:01 p.m., the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel.
