Burlington property owners opened their mailbox to a potentially surprising reassessment of their home s value this week.
The reappraisal took two years to complete. New property evaluations were released April 8, and property owners were notified by mail of the changes this week.
Since the last citywide reappraisal in 2004-2005, the market value of properties in Burlington has increasingly diverged from their assessed values, resulting in dollar amounts that aren t fair and equitably distributed across properties, neighborhoods, and property types, the Office of the City Assessor s website stated.
Because values have changed so substantially since 05, Burlington was required by state law to conduct the reappraisal. The total taxable property value in Burlington is over 3.75 billion, according to the city assessor.

Washington: Until recently, Vermont was best known to outsiders as Americaâs biggest manufacturer of maple syrup, the birthplace of Ben and Jerryâs ice cream and the home of progressive icon Bernie Sanders.
But over the past year Vermont has gained national recognition as the US state that has done better than anywhere else at keeping the coronavirus pandemic under control.
Itâs a rare bright spot in a country that has recorded over 430,000 coronavirus deaths - the most in the world in absolute terms and one of the highest on a per capita basis.
Picturesque Vermont is also a stand-out state for its coronavirus response.
