As the second holiday season of the COVID-19 pandemic begins in the U.S., what are you most thankful for and what do you hope to see happen in the coming year for you, your family or your community?
Abuse of social media had to be stopped
Let us be abundantly clear: in these United States of America “Congress shall make no law . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” This is one of the cornerstones upon which our republic stands, and we rightfully celebrate the exercise of this freedom. In recent years, however, we have been subject to myriad profane actors, whose profligate abuse of this freedom on social media platforms has resulted in the dissemination of outright lies. These falsehoods are eroding the fragile foundations of our democracy.
Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.” These 12 words clearly delineate the limitations of our vaunted “freedom of speech.” But this precious freedom has been under unprecedented attack by Donald Trump since at least June of 2020.
