Unacceptable and unconscionable : Top progressives outraged Biden won t raise refugee cap

‘Unacceptable and unconscionable’: Top progressives outraged Biden won’t raise refugee cap The declaration will bring back regional allocations, in effect casting a wider net of who can arrive to the US under the historically low refugee ceiling currently in place. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, reacted to the news in a statement saying, “It is simply unacceptable and unconscionable that the Biden administration is not immediately repealing Donald Trump’s harmful, xenophobic, and racist refugee cap that cruelly restricts refugee admissions to a historically low level.” The Washington state Democrat went on to say, “By failing to sign an Emergency Presidential Determination to lift Trump’s historically low refugee cap, President Biden has broken his promise to restore our humanity.”

Biden INFURIATES the left, announces he s keeping refugee cap at TRUMP levels! – The Right Scoop

LatAm/Caribbean 3,000 Unallocated Reserve 1,000   Over two months ago, it was announced that Biden would increase it to 125k: JUST NOW: President Biden is raising the US annual refugee cap to 125,000, a dramatic increase from the historic low of 15,000 set by the previous admin for this year. Pres Obama had set a refugee ceiling of 110,000 for FY17 but Pres Trump slashed it to 50,000 upon taking office.   This is quite the reversal. Jonathan Swan with Axios wonders how Biden’s allies will explain this one away: Biden keeps the Trump / Stephen Miller refugee cap. ImmigrationProf Blog Official White House Photo Despite previously announcing that his administration would increase refugee admissions from the 15,000 designated by President Trump, President Biden announced yesterday that he would stick to 15000 for fiscal year 2021.  The President’s directive today has been the subject of some confusion.  Last week, he sent to Congress his budget for the fiscal year starting in October 2021, which honors his commitment.  For the past few weeks, he has been consulting with his advisors to determine what number of refugees could realistically be admitted to the United States between now and October 1.  Given the decimated refugee admissions program we inherited, and burdens on the Office of Refugee Resettlement, his initial goal of 62,500 seems unlikely.
