missing. the town still doesn t have power. and it could be weeks before it s restored. cnn has the latest now. reporter: the death toll continues to rise here in hopkins county, kentucky. we are in the city. a town of nearly 3,000 people. emergency management officials tell us that two-thirds of the city was decimated by the tornados that ripped through here. on friday night. and this is the destruction that many people are still trying to comb through. at this time. everywhere you look it was a stretch of the emergency official tell us that the storm left a swath of a half mile wide of destruction. that it went from the western county line. all the way to the eastern county line. here in hopkins county. it s unlike anything the residents of this county and community has ever seen. that really goes well with what we have heard from a residents
one a couple of cars behind that had derailed and sat between two tracks. then the one behind that one had like completely tipped over and fallen over, and that was kind of the most shocking part. it was like immediate shock when we got off because we didn t know anything that significant had happened. reporter: photos from her and other passengers show several cars on their side. she said there were also passengers in front sleeper cars who were worried about their loved ones riding in other parts of the train. the mood was very, like, disconnected. i think a lot of people were just trying to process what happened, not really understanding, especially the people who were in cars that had tipped over. you know, they were kind of coming out of it not even knowing what to think or how to process what just happened to them really. reporter: right now we know of seven people in different hospitals in the area. that s according to a liberty county, montana, emergency official toda
over the next few hours. so what we re going to be doing is bringing you updates, obviously, as we re out here. i ve reached out to emergency officials to gauge what they ve been seeing so far. we were able to do a short tour in the immediate area, and have already seen power lines that have arced power. power is out in the area. we ve seen debris in the roadways. and, again, that s already the worst of what is expected here in houma hasn t happened yet. the city is bracing for what is to come. many of the people are residents who live here have evacuated. the city s chair tells me anywhere between 60 to 80% of those who live here in the area and in the surrounding area took the warnings and got out. but still, there are a number of people who are still here in houma. this emergency official says at this point, they have to hunker down in place. his concern are for those who are still here.
mode? because that is obviously what s next for you and the men and women you work with. first off, thanks for having me. our lines of effort are very clear. the first is to save lives. that s what the coast guard always does and that s what we ll do in this situation as well. the second is to respond to any marine pollution events that arise because of ida s impact. and the third is to try to get the waterways and the ports reopened as soon as possible after the storm passes. we have flowed forces into the northern gulf coast. we ve got 34 rotary air wing aircraft ready. many are in mobile or houston ready to respond. that s in addition to some of the shallow watercraft and other boats we have prepositioned. and we talked to an emergency official with the city of new orleans earlier on in this program and he was cautioning people in that area that they may have to take care of themselves for 72 hours after
