Authorities are urging people to be careful on the water after a spate of drownings in Victoria and New South Wales. The warning comes as a heatwave in south-east Australia sees residents looking for respite in the water. Seven people have died in Victorian waterways in the past 10 days alone, while several others have drowned in NSW. In Victoria on Saturday two people died in separate incidents. In the first incident, a small vessel carrying two men overturned at Anglesea, roughly 100km south-west of Melbourne, along Victoria s Surf Coast.

Melbourne weather: Victoria braces for intense heat, most significant fire danger

Melbourne’s temperature dropped from 39.2 to the mid-20s just after noon on Monday, after a fast-moving cool change arrived in metro areas earlier than expected. Victoria hotel quarantine inquiry final report: No one owns decision to use guards

Advertisement Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says he intends to adopt all recommendations of a scathing final report into the state s hotel quarantine program that identified flaws with almost every aspect of his government’s setup and oversight of the scheme. The ill-fated decision to employ private security guards for the program aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus into the community was not able to be traced back to any minister or bureaucrat in the state government despite the inquiry reviewing more than 70,000 documents, retired judge Jennifer Coate has found. In her final report, tabled in Parliament today, Ms Coate found that the decision to use private security guards, without adequate training in infection control, was an orphan that neither Mr Andrews nor any of his ministers took any responsibility for.

Daniel Andrews apologises after release of report into Victoria s hotel quarantine bungle

Share on Twitter Victoria s hotel quarantine inquiry has been unable to identify a single individual responsible for the fatal decision to use private security guards in the program. The state s second wave of coronavirus, which resulted in more than 18,000 new infections and 800 deaths, can be traced back to security guards working at the Rydges on Swanston and Stamford Plaza hotels in May and June. In the inquiry s final report, tabled in parliament on Monday, retired judge Jennifer Coate concludes the decision to hire private security guards was not made by an individual . Rather, she argues there were people with influence who contributed to an understanding being reached that private security would be used .
