now it seems like most democrats, most members of your party, are saying we don t need to change that law. let s just go ahead and we ll get the money. but they won t address the core issue and that is changing the law. if they don t change the law, down the road a couple of years, what s going to be the end result? we don t have to go a couple years. let s just go to next year projections. if we have 58,000 right now, we re going to get probably 90,000 by the end of the year, it s predicted we might get 150,000. so if we don t change the law, that means we have to come back with another emergency bill next year and another emergency bill. what happens? do we take money from public education? do we take money from transportation? remember, there is a sequester coming in next year so we have to be smart how we do this. change the policy, give the protection to the kids. but if we need to return the kids, we need to do that with due process.
we have an emergency bill. let s put the resources that we need to put down there and not only for the border, not only for judges, not only for i.c.e., but also with the latin america countries. i just got back from there. it s a full funded appropriation we have to do an emergency bill but we still have to do policy changes. if there s no solution found in congress, should lawmakers go home, should they stay in washington until a solution is found? we should stay in washington, d.c. until we find a solution. absolutely, you are correct. and you would do that? yes, i would. do you think many of your colleagues would? i can t speak for my colleagues, but i can tell you what i want to do and i would say we stay here till we find that solution before we take off for the august work period. congressman, i hope you get something done. thank you so much. still ahead in the newsroom, the crisis at the border putting a bright
and i respectfully disagree with them. it is great that the two of you have come up with this plan but you got twelve days before congress s month long break. can you actually get anything done? the emergency bill and i sit on the proepgs, has to be done. we want to work with the administration. yesterday, we sat down with the administration, with secretary johnson, a good man, he understands what s going on, and certainly the emergency bill has to be done, we hire more judges and do what we need to do. at the same time if we can have the policy change that we re proposing added to the emergency bill, then i think we can get it done if we work together. let s say you can t get it done. should lawmakers actually go on vacation while these kids are staying in deplorable conditions along the border? no. again, we have to get the job done. we go back there and i m traveling the district, at the same time we got about twelve days to get the job done.
here we re talking about this economic problem. we re talking about getting this kind of infrastructure up and running, which is a real issue and danger across the country. we re talking about whether the supplemental emergency bill on immigration we were talking about previously in the hour will even get a vote. why is it, do you think, we don t see congress pick up action anymore on these thing, and what can change that? well, it s the real division, i think, at this point in the republican party. there s a lot of folks there that actually have this sort of faith-based view that the potholes will fix themselves or the states can step up and take over full responsibility. i mean, that defies what has been traditionally a partnership between the state and federal government, particularly on transportation projects, whether it was the transcontinental railroad, the inland canals that were so essential to our early economy, or the interstate highway system that was championed by presid
comprehensive? he could pass a comprehensive border security bill right away. and then go to the next. securing the border is the issue with the republicans. it is because we it s hard to trust this president to enforce the law. right, but the other parts wouldn t be triggered until it was secure. and but what i the way i began this greta, what you see here is the president is trying to make this a fight between him and congress. the only thing is for congress to give him more money when, in fact, he has a half trillion dollars in his budget for domestic security which includes border security and the congress now is considering appropriations for next year that began in october. he doesn t need an emergency bill right now. he has got the flexibility to act in every area that he is talking about. senator, thank you. thank you for it s been pretty wild in the last half hour. thank you. and lois lerner news tonight. and well, this is very suspicious. lois lerner getting c
