Nancy Daly and the Hat Ladies have been sewing fleece hats for Madison children for over 27 years, reaching a milestone of over 100,000 hats this year. Daly, who learned to sew from her grandmother and great aunt, started sewing hats for Head Start children in Dane County in 2002. The program has since expanded to include other groups and organizations, but Daly and her friends have struggled with the pandemic and have had to take everything offsite. They are now reinventing the Hat Ladies for the next year, incorporating in-person events and sewing at home to accommodate volunteers physical and health challenges. They are in need of experienced fabric cutters to continue their work.
