AMSTERDAM - Deana Mancini says one of her rental apartments was damaged by its last tenant, who she says refused to pay rent, knowing she d be protected under New York s eviction moratorium.
Many landlords are families renting out just a few apartments. They say some tenants are abusing the moratorium, while they, the landlords, have to keep paying their expenses. We have mortgages to pay, we have taxes to pay, we have upkeep, said Mancini. If anything is breaking, we re still legally obligated to make these repairs, regardless of whether these people are paying or not.
Property owner Manuel Santiago says his family is out thousands of dollars because of a tenant who simply decided to stop paying. Santiago continues to buy new items for the apartment.

Fired DAs, cops, and critics chip in against Krasner
At least 21 former city prosecutors donated more than $500 to Vega’s campaign, including several who were fired by Krasner and later sued over their dismissal, as well as some who migrated to Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s office.
Vega, 64, was also among the early layoffs in 2017, following Krasner’s election. He later filed an age discrimination lawsuit against the DA, 59, over his firing. The case remains ongoing.
Vega has gotten support from local attorneys, including Jimmy Binns and Michael Diamondstein, as well as defense lawyers Brian McMonagle and Fortunato Perri. The latter two represented former Philly Police Inspector Joseph Bologna in a police brutality case Krasner filed during the George Floyd protests last summer.
Crossroads High School hosted its winter graduation ceremony to recognize students and present diplomas at the Lea Ledger Auditorium at Copperas Cove High School on Jan. 21.
Crossroads conducted a rolling graduation ceremony in accordance with the COVID-19 requirements, in which only graduating students accompanied by a small contingent of family and friends could enter the auditorium when a student received their diploma. At least 28 of the 32 students graduating walked the stage to be recognized and receive their diploma.
Crossroads High School Principal Patrick Crawley said the graduation ceremony was âa really big dealâ because of the hardships the students had to overcome to graduate.
La Poubelle is a snug, family-owned French bistro in Franklin Village. Since opening in 1969, the restaurant has been through its ups and downs, from artist and musician mainstay to celebrity hot spot. In the early aughts, you couldn t walk in without seeing Vince Vaughn, who lived up the street, holding court at the bar. Later, you might find Ashton Kutcher starting a fantasy football draft or Ashley Benson and G-Eazy grabbing a bite to eat there. For many New Yorkers who moved to the neighborhood, it was the first Los Angeles spot they fell in love with.
In recent years, La Poubelle had been on an upswing, according to owner Francoise Koster. But 2020 threw a different kind of curveball. After months of diminishing returns and an attempt at takeout, Koster launched a GoFundMe campaign.
