PETALING JAYA: With new variants of Covid-19 infections in the country, much of what is known about the symptoms has been thrown to the wind.
To further compound the issue, the new variants are highly virulent and more deadly.
For instance, the loss of taste and smell have been commonly associated with Covid-19 infections, but these symptoms show up less frequently in those who have been infected with the variant from the UK, known scientifically as the B.117.
On the other hand, according to virologist Dr Sandy Loh from University of Nottingham Malaysia, those with the UK variant are more likely to cough, have a sore throat, myalgia or muscle aches as well as fatigue.

PETALING JAYA: The gift of the gab gave Pavit Coran
(pix) his maiden opportunity to be in the limelight when he was just 12 years old.
That was when he won the state-level Impromptu Speaking Competition in Kelantan.
Seven years later, he was on the world stage, doing Malaysia proud by winning the English Speaking Union (ESU) International Public Speaking Competition.
The competition, held virtually in keeping with Covid-19 restrictions, saw Pavit beating 35 other participants from 33 countries in the grand final. Many of the participants were from English-speaking countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.

PETALING JAYA: News of another round of movement control order (MCO) has been well-received by most health experts.
An MCO is in order given that infections now are so widespread, according to Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Datuk Dr M. Subramaniam.
Weak compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP), he said, could easily trigger a surge in infections, especially when almost all businesses are open, inter-district travel permitted and most restrictions have been eased.
He told
theSun that employers should also be proactive and take preventive measures by allowing their employees to work from home as much as possible.
The surge in Covid-19 infections over the past few weeks has prompted the National Security Council to impose the MCO in six districts in Selangor from today until May 17. The six districts are Hulu Langat, Petaling, Gombak, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang.

PETALING JAYA: From the assembly line to the courtroom, humans are being replaced by machines and artificial intelligence (AI).
With the drastic change in the work environment brought on by the global Covid-19 pandemic, the process is expected to pick up speed.
In fact, according to a recent statement by the World Bank, half of the jobs in Malaysia are already either disappearing or being performed from remote locations.
Arena Group head of human resources in Asia, Srithren Krishnan, pointed out that digitalisation cannot be stopped or postponed just to wait until a younger generation is ready to take over.
