Welcome to bbc news. Two minutes silence has been observed around the country for Armistice Day. It marked the moment in 1918 when the fighting came to an end in the first world war. There were ceremonies at the National Memorial arboretum in staffordshire, and at the cenotaph on whitehall in london, from where our correspondent Adina Campbell reports. As the crowds gathered into whitehall to the sound of the pipes, looming in front of them the stark cenotaph war memorial, a sobering reminder of the many lives lost in conflict. Big ben was also heard chiming, despite being silent for the last three months, due to repair work. Big ben chimes shortly after the two minutes silence, shortly after the two minutes silence, thousands of people watched on as pipes and drums from the london scottish regiment marched through whitehall in a captivating display.
