“The impacts are coming for sure,” said Stonington Town Manager Kathleen Billings, who forecasts longer wait times for municipal services, including road plowing, registering vehicles and other services, such as permits issued by code enforcement officers, who are in short supply.
Public hearing addresses Second Amendment sanctuary resolution
TRENTON Residents in Trenton will get the chance to comment on proposed referendum articles, which include declaring the town a Second Amendment sanctuary, at a public hearing held at 7 p.m. on April 20.
In part, the proposed resolution states, “The Town of Trenton wishes to further express opposition to any law that would unconstitutionally restrict the rights of our citizens to peacefully keep and bear arms.”
The Board of Selectmen approved including the resolution on the town’s warrant after residents brought it to the board’s attention.
The resolution follows a growing trend of municipalities across the country that are considering declaring themselves “sanctuaries,” as a way to oppose gun control measures.
Former cop is charged
ELLSWORTH
A former Calais police officer who resigned from the force Jan. 30 was charged Friday after allegedly furnishing fentanyl and hydrocodone on the grounds of Narraguagus Junior/Senior High School in Harrington, according to a copy of the charging document provided by the Office of the Maine Attorney General.
Jeffrey Bishop, 53, of Cherryfield was arrested on four counts of aggravated drug furnishing and one count of unlawful drug trafficking by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, for whom Bishop once worked, and agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Bishop resigned from the Calais Police Department effective Jan. 30, according to Calais City Manager Michael Ellis.
