Artist Nancy Andrews of Mount Desert wins prominent fellowship
The award from the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation includes $25,000 and an exhibition at CMCA.
Nancy Andrews has advice for frustrated artists: Never give up on yourself or your art.
Andrews, who chairs the studio arts program at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, has received this year’s $25,000 Ellis-Beauregard Fellowship in the Visual Arts. Andrews makes films, drawings, music and objects, and has received numerous grants and fellowships during a 40-year career in the arts.
The fellowship for Maine visual artists is given annually by the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation of Rockland. Andrews of Mount Desert said she was overwhelmed when the foundation’s executive director, Donna McNeil, and Timothy Peterson, executive director of the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, called with the news. As part of the award, the winning artist receives an exhibition at CMCA.
Emergency grants available for 20 Maine performing artists
The Ellis-Beauregard Foundation is distributing a total of $50,000.

The Ellis-Beauregard Foundation is offering $2,500 emergency COVID-19 grants to 20 Maine artists working in the performing arts who have been adversely affected by the pandemic through illness or loss of income. The money can be used for professional expenses, food, shelter, medical costs, childcare and other things. In total, the foundation will distribute $50,000 to Maine artists.
Applicants must be 18 years or older, live in Maine and have been working in the performing arts in Maine for at least one year. Students enrolled in educational institutions are not eligible.

3 An early December wind storm not the last one, but the one before predictably broke tree limbs, knocked out power and so forth. It also toppled a monolithic sculpture of 5,264 plastic egg cartons built by Brooklyn-based artist Carlos Reyes in a Quonset hut on a back road in Searsport.
The piece, titled “saltwaterfarm,” was the centerpiece of the third iteration of Waldo, a nonprofit art residency and exhibition program founded by Tobias Czudej in 2018 as a vehicle for experimental exhibitions of new artworks.
