Centralized sales tax collection bill is the holy grail to Louisiana leaders
Mark Ballard
In what a business lobbyist calls the holy grail of the session, House Speaker Clay Schexnayder is pressing a bill he hopes will overcome generations of reluctance by local governmental taxing agencies to turn over their sales tax collection and distribution authority to the state.
While municipal governments haven t rallied around House Bill 199, at least they re not throwing up roadblocks to it. The bill would create a new centralized system that would align Louisiana s taxing system with those in rest of the country.. We appreciate the speaker including us and local government in providing input on the bill, John Gallagher, head of the Louisiana Municipal Association, said Thursday. At this time, we remain neutral and asking our members for input while we remain actively engaged in the process.
Shawn Wilson, the secretary of the state s Department of Transportation and Development, advocated for an increase in the state s gas tax on the Ellevate Louisiana videocast, which he said would help the state better manage and improve its infrastructure, though he said that the upcoming legislative session might not be the best time.
On the videocast, which was released Wednesday, Wilson championed some of the department s recent accomplishments, such as the I-10 widening in St. Martin Parish, while also pushing for the increased gas tax. Ten states have gone two decades or more without a gas tax increase, Wilson said. And guess what Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Shreveport? The state that you re in is one of those states that s gone more than two decades without addressing our gas tax.
