The Barbados YouthADVANCE Corps (BYAC) recently hosted its Parents Orientation Meeting for Cohort 5 at the Ellerslie Secondary School. The September 17 programme for parents, guardians and trainees provided an opportunity for the Barbados YouthADVANCE Corps team to meet and share its mandate giving greater insight into the two-year dynamic programme.Director of the Barbados YouthADVANCE Corps, Hally Haynes, informed parents and trainees that the programme demanded a huge financial commitment from government of some 12 million dollars to cover programming and operational costs and the monthly stipend of $600 allocated to each trainee, to offset the cost of transportation to the various programmes, meals and uniforms. Haynes made a call for parents to partner with the programme, and trainees to demonstrate their appreciation through their reliability and commitment to attend and fully participate in all activities and assignments.
Two young, gifted players – batter Demetrius Richards and left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce – have been lauded by veteran Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) coach Dexter Toppin for their outstanding performances so far in the Barbados Pride four-day practice match at Desmond Haynes Oval. The praise came before lunch on the second day today. Later, a couple other players also made an impact with bat and ball.Richards slammed a century, Boyce took five wickets, veteran all-rounder Kevin Stoute fell short of a ton by four runs and later Zachary McCaskie made 79, with left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop bagging a ‘five-for’.Left-hander Richards, 20, hit a commanding 105 off 149 balls in 227 minutes with 14 fours, while the 36-year-old Stoute, who has played as many as 76 first-class matches since his debut 15 years ago (January 3, 2007 against Trinidad & Tobago at the well-appointed North Stars Cultural & Social Club ground, Crab Hill, St. Lucy), scored 96 off exactly 100 deliveries
Classroom, the best choice for students

The Barbados Association of Guidance Counsellors is fully in agreement with students returning to the classroom.
President of the association Dr Patricia Welch firmly believes that even as the country continues to battle COVID-19, it is vital that students are allowed to interact with their teachers and friends in a face-to-face setting.
Her comments follow an eventful return to face-to-face classes. At least three schools have been closed because of positive COVID-19 cases among students.
Since the resumption of physical classes on May 2, the Princess Margaret Secondary School, Ellerslie Secondary and most recently Vauxhall Primary, have all been forced to temporarily close their doors.
