Garbage privatization will save Gloversville money, city public works director says | The Daily Gazette

GLOVERSVILLE Department of Public Works Director Chris Perry said the city’s decision to hire a private garbage hauler will allow his department to eliminate four DPW jobs through attrition, saving the city $225,000 in salary and benefit costs every year going forward.
The Common Council voted 5-2 on Feb. 23 to contract with Clifton Park-based Twin Bridges Waste and Recycling to take over for the city’s six-man garbage collection service.
Mayor Vince DeSantis and the proponents of the deal have argued that converting the city to a private hauler will save the city at least $500,000 over the four years of the contract and city residents will see improved service with garbage pails provided to them by Twin Bridges and collection occurring five days per week instead of the current four-day system.

GLOVERSVILLE Councilman-at-large William Rowback Jr. announced Tuesday he would be running as the Republican Party candidate for mayor in November.
Rowback was the Republican candidate during the 2017 city mayoral election when he lost to former Mayor Dayton King 1,800-1,490, after a recount reversed what had initially been thought to be a Rowback victory. After his defeat Rowback, who worked for 30 years as a city firefighter, vowed to one day become mayor of Gloversville. The current mayor is Vince DeSantis, a Democrat.
On Tuesday Rowback said he hopes 2021 will be the year he achieves that ambition.

GLOVERSVILLE The Common Council on Tuesday voted 5-2 to approve a one-year contract to hire a private garbage hauler to collect the city’s residential garbage starting May 1.
The city is hiring Twin Bridges Waste and Recycling, out of Clifton Park, to provide weekly garbage collection at single family, two-family and three-family homes.
The private hauler will replace the weekly garbage pickup currently performed by the city’s Department of Public Works. Four-unit or more houses/apartment buildings will not receive garbage pickup from Twin Bridges. Buildings with four or more units in Gloversville are currently required to pay for their own private garbage collection, and city officials said that will not change.
