Suburban students heading back to school this week for the first day of classes will see some semblance of normalcy restored. The biggest change is the resumption of fully in-person classes for all students, except those seeking medical exemptions for continuing with remote learning. But some pandemic remnants persist.

New contract for District 59 teaching assistants

The Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 board has inked a new five-year contract with the union representing secretaries, teaching assistants and tutors.
Under the new agreement, members of the Educational Support Professionals group of the District Education Association will earn average salary increases of 3.5% next school year, followed by 3.25%, 3.25%, 3.25% and 3% in the successive years.
The school board unanimously approved the deal Monday, and union membership ratified it last Friday. Bargaining teams for both sides started negotiations for a successor to the expiring four-year agreement in the spring. The new deal run through June 2026.

A new assistant superintendent and four new principals will begin next school year in Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59, under hirings approved by the school board this week.
They will join new Superintendent Terri Bresnahan, who was hired by the board in January to take the helm from Art Fessler on July 1.
Susan Savage will be the new assistant superintendent of instruction after the retirement of Maureen McAbee. Savage, who has been principal of Robert Frost Elementary since 2017, will earn an annual salary of $158,000.
Michael Wheatley will be the new principal of Friendship Junior High School. He currently is principal of Creekside Middle School in Woodstock Community Unit District 200, where he s worked for the last five years. This wasn’t a problem for these same people when it was their team doing it. My local community college board got taken over by partisan right wingers, and we just have to live with it.
Agree with the suggestion to eliminate odd year elections. Saves money, makes sure your reps are elected by a representative number of voters.
