Funeral procession brings attention to overdose rise

PROVIDENCE Doctors in white coats carried five caskets from hearses to the grass of the field next to the Providence Amtrak Station Sunday.
It did not make sense, doctors carrying caskets. A great deal doesn’t make sense in the epidemic of fatal overdoses, which in Rhode Island in 2020 set a record, with at least 400 people dying from overdoses statewide.
Several groups collaborated to stage a funeral procession and candlelight vigil in Providence Sunday afternoon to bring attention to a problem that, as signs declared, is 100% preventable.
