A sickly “southern lady” of Williamsburg, Elizabeth Judith “Lizzie” Galt, took the occasion of New Year’s 1854 to pause and meditate on the day, as she put it in poems especially prepared for The Virginia Gazette, when the new year and old year “shake hands.”
