Eleven of 20 respondents to a Herald School Board candidate survey favor the district's proposed $55 million referendum for a new Valley Middle School and district central kitchen.
Teacher recruiting/retention is among the top issues facing the board in the coming years, many of the candidates say, and that interest pleases Superintendent Terry Brenner.
There are 23 School Board candidates; the Herald emailed a questionnaire to all but one (Aaron Waterman did not respond to a phone voice-message requesting his email address). Of those, 20 responded, and their answers are below.
In each contest, incumbents will be returning to stand for reelection, though two City Council members and one member of County Commission are not seeking another term.
