She lived with her father, John O’neal, a planter and slaveholder, and mother, Eliza Henrietta Hamilton. Rose was the third of five daughters, and was very close to her older sister, Ellen. She grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland with her family. Her father died when she was a girl, and as a result, her mother moved Rose and Ellen to live with their aunt in Washington, D.C. Here she met many important people and political leaders.
