Woven, Open Road to give Mother’s Day concert at Bethel It’s been two years since Bethel College’s small a cappella groups have been able to give a full concert. Open Road (men) and Woven (women) will give a joint concert May 9 at 2 p.m. on the steps of the Administration Building on the Bethel campus. Both Woven and Open Road are student-led groups that choose their own music and arrange their own practice schedules. Members are all part of the Bethel College Concert Choir. Like everything else, last year’s joint concert was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Students create book drive for jail

Students create book drive for jail The Kansan Elise Jantz, a senior at Newton High School this year, envisions jail as a claustrophobic place, with those inside needing a mental break from that now and then.  Jantz, and members of the National Honor Society, delivered tools for that mental break on Good Friday boxes of books for the Harvey County Detention Center Library. There were more than 220 books in those boxes, collected over the course of a few weeks.  She got the idea from her sister, who donates to a jail in her area.  We were looking for a group service project at that time, and I thought this one would be a good one for us to do, Jantz said.

Two NHS students named National Merit Scholars The Newton Kansan The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced the names of the 15,000 finalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Newton High School had two semifinalists, Jakob Graber and Elise Jantz. More than 1.5 million juniors entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). According to the National Merit website, to become a finalist, the semifinalist and a high school official had to submit an application with information on their academic records, honors and awards received. The student also wrote an essay. The National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from the finalists based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in college studies.
