2020 review: combined events and relays | NEWS

Kevin Mayer and Ivona Dadic   As this extraordinary year draws to a close, we look back at the key moments of 2020 in each area of the sport. The series begins today with a review of combined events and relays. It will be followed over the coming days by reviews of all the other event groups. Decathlon In this extraordinary 2020 season, we actually had to wait until the last weekend before Christmas for the best results in the men’s decathlon. Like many competitions in this pandemic-battered year, one marked by pain, loss and uncertainty, the setting for this assault on the record over this rarely-run distance was an unlikely one: a low-key intra-squad competition on a high school track with few competitors and no spectators. But with few competitive opportunities available to them during the main summer season, the Bowerman Track Club quartet took full advantage, averaging sub-4:07 legs to smash the previous record of 16:33.58 set by the Kenyan quartet of Mercy Cherono, Faith Kipyegon, Irene Jelegat and Hellen Obiri at the World Relays on 25 May 2014.
