The Mail readers shock after gulls found dead in Barrow

Fears of bird killer as dead gulls found

A SANCTUARY owner fears a bird killer may be targetting Barrow gulls. It comes as three dead gulls were spotted on rooftops within a short distance of each other on Sunday. One was found on a roof in Anson Street; another on a roof in Cumberland Court; and tragically a mother gull was found dead on a roof on Franklin Street. The mother gull fell out of her nest when she died, leaving behind young chicks and her mate. Bardsea Bird Sanctuary owner Elisabeth Ashleigh said: “Something has happened to them. The female literally toppled off of her nest with her babies nestling under her.

Barrow left outraged after geese killed in Wilkie Road

A COMMUNITY has been left shocked and outraged after a family of well-known Barrow geese were ‘ploughed’ into and killed. The geese were run over on Wednesday night as they crossed Wilkie Road, near Barrow AFC s ground, with several dying as a result. Feathers and blood stains could be seen on the pavement and road yesterday morning. A resident, who was passing through the area at around 9:30pm, said the road looked like a ‘murder scene.’ He said about thirteen geese were involved and that police were on scene asking people for information. “It was like a murder scene; feathers and blood were all over the place,” he said.

Hopes to expand Bardsea Bird Sanctuary to cater to growing demand

A BIRD sanctuary has revealed potential plans to take over disused dog kennels to house injured seagulls. Bosses at Bardsea Bird Sanctuary said it was ‘struggling to cope’ with the number of injured birds coming into the facility and was considering taking over a larger space to cater to the growing demand. Sanctuary bosses have discussed adapting a former dog kennels on Walney into a facility to care for larger gulls. Elisabeth Ashleigh, of Bardsea Bird Sanctuary, said these gulls needed to be cared for in a ‘safe and secure’ place. She said: “We are getting more notifications about injured gulls than we can handle because we do not have enough volunteers and are dealing with many other birds.

Ripped open pigeon saved by kind-hearted samaritan

A pigeon left on the brink of death by a vicious attack has a new lease of life thanks to a kind-hearted samaritan. An injured pigeon was rushed to Bardsea Bird Sanctuary over the weekend after it was spotted ‘cut open’ outside Burger King in Barrow. The bird was ‘close to death’ when it was taken to the vet for emergency care, with quick-thinking efforts helping to save it. Elisabeth Ashleigh, of Barrow Bird Sanctuary, said birds with serious injuries should never be left to suffer and die. She said: “The pigeon was being attacked by another bird and a kind man saw the whole thing and was so upset about it.
