South Florida’s first baby of the new year will have some competition this Saturday: Someone in Broward or Palm Beach County will cast the first vote anywhere in the country in a 2022 election for Congress.
Monday, Dec. 13, is the deadline to register to vote in the January elections to finalize the next South Florida member of Congress and choose three members of the Florida Legislature.
Mixed in with early holiday cards, bills and junk mail, 140,000-plus South Floridians will begin receiving something else on Saturday: vote-by-mail ballots. The arrival of the ballots kicks off the first phase of voting in four elections in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
