congress returns to capitol hill from its holiday recession this week. the u.s. senate will be back in session tomorrow, the u.s. house resuming work on tuesday. cnn learned that lawmakers have been working through the recess to reach a compromise on spending. for more let s bring in elena treen. what do we know about the talks about spending negotiations? reporter: these talks are a huge priority for congress when they return this week. really it s all about trying to avoid a potential government shutdown. right now the house and senate are careening toward a spending standoff that will likely con consume congress this fall. they need to find some agreement to move the talks forward. as of right now, far right members in the house and house republicans are pushing for spending cuts most of congress is not comfortable with. like we ve seen before speaker

that office. cnn s elena treen, she has been following the details here. elena, tell us what the committee chairman, james comer, what specific allegations he made but also what specific evidence he s presenting here. reporter: well, jim, james comer and republicans on his committee released a new memo this morning with evidence including new bank records that show members of biden s family received payments from foreign entities linked to china sxlinkd to romania and that some of those payments were made while joe biden was vice president. really, this is all part of james comer s investigation to show that members of the biden family enriched themselves by using the family name. they re also trying to allege that biden may have been influenced in some of his decision-making, his decisions were influenced by these payments, although they offered no evidence of that. now here s james comer at a press conference laying out these findings this morning. this committee is investigating
weighed bringing charges against him for alleged tax crimes and makiing a false statement. but so far hunter biden denies any wrongdoing and no charges have been filed. we also heard from president biden on this last night during an interview with msnbc where he continues to support his son and says he stands by him. let s take a listen. sir, there is something personal that s affecting you. your son, while there s no ties to you, could be charged by your department of justice. how will that impact your presidency? first of all, my son has done nothing wrong. i trust him. i have faith in him, and it impacts my presidency by making me feel proud of him. well, fredricka, those comments are pretty typical and standard of what we ve heard from the president as it relates to his son so far. he says that he supports him and that he s proud of him and that he believes he is innocent. he also said that he does not think that it will affect his presidency nor his 2024 re-election campaign
