Melrose Public Schools seeing enrollment rising in coming fall

Neil Zolot / Special to the Free Press Enrollment in the Melrose schools is projected to jump from 3,704 from the June 2021 to 3,887 in September, primarily through increases in Pre-K, Kindergarten and first grade. “It’s an important data source for us to monitor,” Superintendent Julie Kukenberger said at the June 22 School Committee meeting, adding the numbers will affect staffing, supplies, and state aid among other things. The population will rise from 454-511 in Pre-K and Kindergarten; 1,528-1,558 in elementary grades 1-5; 819-846 at the Middle School and 915-965 at the High School. The number of students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 are the highest, with 315 in Kindergarten, 317 in Grade 1; 290 in 2; 308 in 3; 326 in 4; 317 in 5 and 292 in 6.

Neil Zolot / Special to the Melrose Free Press The School Department and Department of Public Works are planning needed capital projects for Fiscal Year 2022 and beyond, totaling millions. “We’re glad to get to some of the projects we were not able to last year because of COVID,” Superintendent Julie Kukenberger said at the School Committee meeting Tuesday, June 22, the first at City Hall in over a year. “I’m amazed at the projects we plan to do, but also a little nervous,” DPW Director Elena Proakis Ellis admitted. “It’ll be tough to get through that much work, but we’ll try. We’re sort of starting at ground zero because of COVID. Each year we’ll chip away at it little by little.”

Traffic is being detoured in both directions at Cleveland and Adams streets. Workers were able to limit the break s impact on water pressure to about a block of, Department of Public Works Director Elena Proakis Ellis told Patch. Subscribe Proakis Ellis said it s too early to know what the cause or extent of the break is. Until those are known, it s difficult to say when the break would be fixed but they normally take less than six hours.
