The start of court proceedings against Peru s former president Alberto Fujimori for a program blamed for forcibly sterilizing thousands of poor, mostly indigenous women has generated hope among victims that justice will finally be served. We ve been waiting more than 20 years for justice. I want them to recognize us, to apologize to all the women threatened or coerced into being sterilized, Gloria Basilio Huaman told AFP.
She said authorities tricked her into getting her fallopian tubes tied when she was 27, as part of a family planning program implemented by Fujimori during the final four years of his mandate.

Lima, Jan 21 (efe-epa).- Maria Elena Carbajal was sterilized on 18 September 1996, after giving birth to her fourth child, amid pain and lies and under pressure from doctors who told that she might lose her newborn.
“The doctors and nurses came to ask me to have a ligation,” she says, barely able to hold back her tears. “I told them ‘no, my husband wouldn’t like it’, but they kept on repeating that I didn’t have to sign any papers, that I would be able to have more children.
“Because they kept insisting and to be able to see my son, I was forced to accept.”
