money in the pockets of the american people and doing smart things to create jobs along with school modernization, putting people back to work making sure they have the support that they need and our economy can grow while making investments in education. let s talk about education. day three of education nation here. talk a little bit in the simplest of terms. talk about the change that the president is making to no child left behind. what the president announced this past friday is that we re moving forward. he has been encouraging and trying to work with congress for the past few years to reauthorize the elementary and secondary education act. a number of people are trying but congress has not gotten over the finish line. the kids cannot wait any longer. we are using the flexibility in the law to make sure that we are supporting our teachers and we re doing the best to help them do their jobs. we are releasing them from the cookie-cutter requirements of no
chairman of the house education workforce committee what are you doing to take action to cut some of this waste and save some of these tax dollars? one of first thing we did when we saw the duplication and number of programs was look at the number of educational programs if the elementary and secondary education act, no child left behind. there are more than 80 of these programs. we introduced legislation and brought it to committee. it has passed the committee to eliminate 42 of those programs. some are redown dan. some haven t been funded. redundant. some been funded, some to a higher level we are trying to get rid of some of this waste. we ll be taking it up on the floor of the house to eliminate half of those programs in k-12 education. the gao as we recall recently found billions of taxpayer dollars are being on duplicative and redundant

spending. four states were controlled by republicans, three states and the district of columbia are controlled by democrats. and eight states have split control between the executive and the legislative branches. as congress considers reauthorizing the elementary and secondary education act, we ve been learning more about this. governor, good to have you with us. why do you support the continued funding for pre-k programs in your home state of alabama? you know, if you went back ten years ago, i m not too sure that i did support it until i began to read about it, understand it, understand that a child is less likely to drop out of school, less likely to ever go into a detention program if they have 4-year-old pre-k. we just made a decision that we
