spying. casey stegal is live in los angeles with more on this. reporter: hi, heather. a nice, fair and balanced debate here. energy companies and president obama claim that the smart meters are the way of the future, in terms of going green. they replace your traditional electric meter on your home or business and the new ones constantly transmit your electricity use back to the utility provider, wirelessly. this allows customers to monitor their own bill in real time so they know where to cut back and perhaps conserve. but there is a fear among many customers that the smart meters allow the energy companies to spy on you. they can tell when your refrigerator comes on and for how long, your kettle, your toaster. they know what you are doing in your home, who is in your home, when you are there, when you are not. reporter: n.v. energy is the latest to install them. the company provides electricity to 99% of nevada residents.
