COVID-19 continues to creep into all areas of life – including the 2020 U.S. census which also impacts local elections.
Because the pandemic delayed the gathering of information for the census, members of the Kings Mountain City Council recently voted to push out its municipal election until 2022.
Cleveland County Board of Elections Director Clifton Philbeck said it was a logical move for the elected officials, and he doesn’t anticipate any others in Cleveland County to follow suit. No other cities or towns in Gaston County are expected to change their election cycles.
Kings Mountain has five wards. Only residents within each ward can vote for their representative, unlike in Shelby and Gastonia where all voters can vote in all wards, Philbeck said.
