Restaurant owner ordered to pay $125,000, after minimum wage violations and worker exploitation

After working hours, Bisht often made George do chores around his home, documents showed. During his employment, George worked 70 hours per week for seven days, often he worked for eight to ten weeks without any days off, the authority heard. George told a labour inspector it was rare to finish work at the restaurant’s closing time, and he sometimes worked as late as 1am. In 2017, George requested to take leave to visit his mother who was sick. He requested it in January but Bisht would not allow him to take leave until June. His mother died before he was able to visit her and he was not given permission to attend her funeral.

Vague employment contract costs hotel management company VR Group $17,000

123rf The Employment Relations Authority has awarded Girish Shetty, a former employee of hotel management company VR Group, $17,000 after the company failed to provide clear targets for his $30,000 bonus. He said there had been no discussion or agreement about the targets either verbally or in his employment agreement. However, J R Chaturvedi, VR Group’s director of group operations and sales, marketing and revenue, told the authority the bonus was dependent solely on financial targets. Shetty said while he had received budgets during his tenure, he had not been told they were the basis for his bonus targets. In January 2019, VR Group called Shetty into a performance appraisal meeting. The two sides disagreed over the reason for the meeting.

Worker exploitation leads to calls for tougher penalties in the booming massage industry

STUFF Massage shops have joined nail bars and beauty salons as mall staples, but there are concerns about the way some treat their staff. A masseuse paid as little as 86 cents an hour by an Auckland massage shop wants tougher penalties for employers caught exploiting vulnerable workers. Businesses “pressing the flesh” have exploded with shops in many malls and suburban shopping areas offering on the spot treatments for walk-in customers. Since 2018, close to 1000 massage therapists have been granted visas to work here, and the Labour Inspectorate is taking an interest in how well those treating our aches and pains are being treated by their employers.
