Air India has been fined Rs 30 lakh by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the death of an elderly passenger who chose to walk from the aircraft to the terminal building due to a shortage of wheelchairs. The airline failed to comply with the regulations on passenger assistance for those with disabilities. The DGCA has advised all airlines to ensure an adequate number of wheelchairs are available for passengers who require assistance.
According to reports, the 70-year-old Nebraj Batra, was going to Raipur from the Jammu Tawi Durg Express train. He stepped out of the train to get water in Gwalior but in the meantime, the train started from the station.
