ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) Two men were arrested on Thursday by the Monroe County Sheriff s Office. They re accused of attempting to scam an elderly woman out of thousands of dollars.
Investigators have been dealing with a new type of a cash bail scam, where the actual scammer shows up at their victim s home in person. News10NBC also has some advice from the Elder Justice Committee of Metro Justice.
The Monroe County Sheriff s Office says since the end of March they ve investigated five different incidents of this scam throughout the county.
Here s how it works. Usually, scammers working together will call an elderly person. One of them pretends to be a family member in trouble with the law, for let’s say driving under the influence. Then the other scammer will join the call pretending to be with the police, or an attorney asking for cash to bail out their family member.
