Like its 2018 predecessor, J Mascis’ fourth solo album plays a little like Dinosaur Jr. Jr., another softer guitar-focused outing with acoustic touches and electric sparks.
What Do We Do Now has some interesting moments on its first side, but quite a bit of it does feel leaden and lacking in energy. The decision to add electric lead guitars to a J Mascis solo record for the first time is a welcome one.

Dinosaur Jr. have announced their 12th studio album and shared its lead single, ‘I Ran Away’ featuring Kurt Vile.
‘I Ran Away’, released Tuesday (February 23), is the first new music from the band in almost five years. It will appear on their new album ‘Sweep It Into Space’, which is set for release on April 30 via Jagjaguwar.
The track features Vile playing 12-string acoustic guitar. Vile also served as the album’s co-producer, alongside frontman and guitarist J Mascis.

The band have also shared a visualiser for the single, featuring work from the album’s cover artist Andy Hope.

Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not and had been scheduled to arrive last year before the pandemic upended release plans. In spite of that, the 12-track collection is said to be a masterpiece of zoned dialling. I Ran Away is the first song from the album to arrive, and it features added 12-string guitar courtesy of Kurt Vile. As it happens, Vile co-produced
Sweep It into Space with the trio, beginning sessions in the fall of 2019.
