When Elaine Walsh was diagnosed with womb cancer in January she was immediately classed as an urgent case. She should have been operated on within weeks but the procedure was cancelled due to the backlog caused by the pandemic. Her story isn t unusual. BBC News has carried out an in-depth analysis on the impact of Covid on the NHS and found there is a huge backlog with waiting lists ballooning at some hospitals. But plans are under way to tackle the backlog and Elaine is due to have surgery tomorrow.
Robbie Lawlor blew viewers away as he chatted candidly about the realities of HIV in Ireland on The Tommy Tiernan Show. The HIV activist has been raising awareness about the virus for several years now having been diagnosed with it aged just 21.
Sitting down with the comedian on Saturday night he was hailed as ‘fantastic’ by viewers as he spoke about his own experience with HIV and helped educate viewers on the condition.
He revealed that he was, ‘completely shocked,’ by the diagnosis as he was unaware that HIV was in Ireland when he went for his first check-up.
‘At the age of 21, I went for my very first sexual health check and I was just out of college. I was completely shocked because I didn’t know anyone who had HIV. I didn’t know HIV was in this country,’ he explained to Tommy.
