Pastor Billy Houze knows firsthand how important police officers are. The local pastor recalled a time a friend from the past confronted him, but an officer pulled up just in time to diffuse the situation. The officer pulled up just in time and called my name. He said, ‘You have the wrong guy. I know he didn’t do this,’ said Houze. Thank God for good policing, and the sad part is they get overshadowed with the bad ones.”
But the pastor of Lawndale First Baptist Church cannot turn a blind eye to the other side of law enforcement, where he says police brutality is often overlooked. As the country draws closer to the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death, one cannot help but wonder, where do we go from here?
Cleveland County NAACP welcomes new president
The Rev. Elaine Ollemi of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church was recently named the new president of the Cleveland County chapter of the NAACP. She brings to the organization a lifetime of experience fighting for equal rights. I truly believe that God has sent me on this assignment. The mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights for all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and discrimination, said Ollemi. And I fully believe in that mission.
Ollemi said she has spent much of her life traveling the world and interacting with other cultures. Her experiences have given her an appreciation for how other countries view race relations, and she hopes to bring some of those customs to her home.
